Reviews: “Drum Rudiment System” drumset method and DVDs by Lionel Duperron

As a student I spent many years in drumline and even more time at my drumset. Even though I studied both styles, my drumset lessons never really focused on rudiments.
I only wish the Drum Rudiment System had been available to me back then.

The Drum Rudiment System is all about applying rudiments on drumset.

What’s included? Drumset methods for beginner, intermediate, and advanced with exercises, grooves and fills from three workbooks demonstrated through six DVDs. Each level covers all 40 rudiments and gradually increases the demand and difficulty.

First, the beginner series teaches each rudiment on the pad using both slow-motion and multiple camera angles to allow you to see exactly what each hand is doing.

Next, you get behind the drumset to learn sets of grooves and fills incorporating all 40 rudiments. There’s also a series of longer, single-drum rudimental exercises.

In total there’s over 450 rudiment-based grooves and fills for you to learn!

Reasons I like the Drum Rudiment System author, Lionel Duperron:

  • Lionel focuses solely on teaching rudiments on drumset. There’s really no excessive solos or life-story moments. You just learn a lot about drums.
  • Lionel’s teaches through progression - not just beginner to advanced, but even basic concepts like stroke-types before accent patterns and rudiment stickings before timing. This sense of foundation is very important.
  • Lionel’s background is in drumset, not marching percussion. There’s some very unique ways that the rudimental grooves and fills are constructed that hopefully open some doors towards your own creativity on drumset.

My one criticism: the initial price shock. Methods of this scope and depth won’t come cheap, but it’s a better investment than buying more of those entry-level method books or life-story artist DVDs that are starting to collect dust on your shelf.

Overall I’d recommend the Drum Rudiment System to players and students who want to explore what’s possible with rudiments on the drumset.
